About Tony Blair Institute for Global Change:

At the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change we are dedicated to making globalisation work for the many, not the few. We do this by helping countries, their people and their governments, address some of the most difficult challenges in the world today – beginning with those where we think we can break new ground, offering leaders new thinking and new approaches. Our staff – over 200 of them, based all over the world – are working on some of the most intractable problems around issues of co-existence, governance, the peace process in the Middle East and renewing the centre. 

Focus of the Role:

(1) Coordination: Planning and Processes

(1.A) Development of systems and processes for production and design

  • Develop and communicate to all staff clear production process and time estimates to ensure efficient production of resources

(1.B) Proactive planning and monitoring of production requirements

  • Proactively engage, through regular meetings, with pillars and central functions to understand and plan their design needs
  • Plan and organise production schedules
  • Work with the Communications Team to ensure production requirements are coordinated with a central grid
  • Communicate with a range of senior stakeholders to provide updates on publications and video

(1.C) Build knowledge and skills of all staff on production

  • Ensure processes are known to staff
  • Empower staff to produce well branded resources themselves through the implementation of templates and tools

(2.D) Manage and support all design-related work across the Institute

  • Directly manage senior visual designer
  • Manage external agency design support
  • Coordinate and work with staff working in other departments on design-related. This may include providing design support to data visualisers and videographers.

(2) Production

(2.A) Manage design of thought-leadership work (major publications and reports):

  • Attend scoping meetings with author/resource lead to help them through the writing, proofing and approval stages
  • Assess project and resource requirements, including estimating, negotiating and agreeing budgets and timescales.
  • Work closely with Communications, Digital Engagement and Events teams to understand their requirements for the publications.
  • Liaise with printing company to arrange printing

(2.B) Manage design of programme-based creative projects:

  • Initiate and run scoping meetings with programme teams to help them through the planning/briefing stages for projects that require design deliverables.
  • Assess project and resource requirements, including estimating, negotiating and agreeing budgets and timescales.

(2.C) Manage the design of corporate marketing materials

  • Manage the design of corporate marketing materials (brochures, two-pagers, flyers, etc)

(2.C) Manage outsourcing of design support when required:

  • Liaise with external agencies and commission work

(3) Coherence: Brand Discipline

(3.A) Ensure all design work is abiding by the brand guidelines

  • Ensure visual identity is being used properly throughout the organisation

What We Look For in Our People:

We are looking for a Design Manager to join our team in London. The Design Manager will coordinate and lead creative and design projects and manage the design team. They will report to the Executive Director of External Relations.

  • Extensive experience working in a creative management role
  • A strong working knowledge of online and offline design, brand development and the creative process
  • Excellent organisation and communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects
  • Knowledge of layouts, graphic fundamentals, typography & limitations of online and offline design work
  • Experience with Adobe software including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
