This is a rare opportunity to be part of a busy studio within the world’s leading banknote and passport Design Team.
The De La Rue Design Studio has designed a third of the world’s circulating banknote denominations, 25 passports globally and also work closely with some of the world’s leading brands. We are looking for a Design Team Leader who can inspire, develop and manage a team of banknote and passport designers.
You do not require experience in banknote design, but we are seeking some critical attributes for this role:
You will have a background in product or graphic design and be very aware of fantastic design wherever you are and be able to bring inspiration into the studio.
Critically you have proven experience leading teams of designers, with the requisite ability to manage schedules, deadlines and reporting cycles. You will have a critical eye and the design awareness to ensure the highest quality of output. You are comfortable and enjoy managing people and seeing them develop – wherever they are on their career journey.
Design is a pivotal function at De la Rue and we will expect you to engage with customers, Sales, R&D and Product teams at home and abroad. In your career you will have a track record of meeting and managing high profile and demanding clients. You will enjoy running design brainstorming and workshop sessions with them and co-ordinating your design team to deliver.
1. Purpose of the Job (what is the function of the position?)
Manage and develop a team of Designers of varying levels of ability and experience, through coaching and mentorship and a focus on team capability. Responsible for the motivation and support of all direct reports and empowering teamwork to drive high performance and positive behaviours.
Monitor the requests and workloads made of the team to ensure key project priorities are met and that all other activities are delivered to agreed timescales.
The role will have ownership of discrete projects and activities, and will understand the fundamentals of project management in order to better assist project work across all Creative Design teams where appropriate.

3. Key Activities (what gets done)
•Proactively build employee engagement, capability, and expertise (both technical and professional) within the immediate team.
•Encourage an ethos of personal development ownership and fostering knowledge across teams.
•Lead, mentor, develop and motivate the team, ensuring full participation in the performance development review (PDR) process.
•Drive performance ensuring that all team members have stretching personal objectives, development plans and regular 1:1s to embed a high performance culture.
•Work with the Creative Design Management Team and Human Resources to identify and develop high potential employees, and ensure an available talent pipeline to meet business and capability requirements.
•Adopt standard and innovative techniques for education, training and mentoring ensuring time allocated to personal development and training delivers maximum return.
•Ensure and maintain an up to date record of all training and development activities/programmes.
•Champion a culture that encourages continual improvement, achieving business goals and delighting customers.
•Manage poor performance through formal performance plans or disciplinary procedures.
•Leads and facilitates regular team meetings & innovative thinking activities.
•Acts as a role model, displaying a positive enthusiastic, can-do approach in the face of adversity.
•Participate in recruitment and selection activities.
•Understand requirements of all work required of the team; scheduling designers’ time to ensure the demand pipeline is matched against capacity. Any priority conflicts are highlighted and communicated to the Creative Design Manager.
•Produce timely and accurate information to the Creative Design Manager on any risks or successes.
•Liaise with Department Managers, to ensure communication on a day-to-day basis around resource planning and any key concerns.
•Manage team annual leave requests in accordance with scheduling requirements.
•Provides cover for one or more strategic programmes (product review boards, digital strategy and other commercial decision making forums)
•Owns discrete projects and activities, supporting project work across the Department where appropriate.
•Develop and maintain a depth of industry, client and product knowledge that enables you to be effective as a leader and credible as a thought partner.
•Develop and maintain successful working relationships with stakeholders within Design Operations and wider De La Rue teams.
•Attend business planning and production meetings and any other meetings where Team leaders are required.
•Keep up to date with APQP requirements, e.g. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Control Plans and monitor the use of the APQP checklist where applicable.
•Prepare clear and concise monthly reports in line with the requirements of the Creative Design Manager and Director.
•To support the behaviour of working as One De La Rue, sharing best practice and collaborating with colleagues outside of own sphere of business.

4. Qualifications and Experience
•A-level or degree or equiv in graphic design, fine art or related subject
•Extensive breadth of experience in industry
•Strong technical knowledge; able to interpret design briefs and convert to artwork to high standards, within Standard Operating Procedures and design rules, and at pace (Creative Suite desirable)
•Proven experience in leading a large and diverse team
•Excellent written, spoken and interpersonal communication skills
•Ability to effectively utilise coaching techniques and style
•Ability to negotiate and influence and progress to a positive outcome for all parties
•Resilience in matters of complexity, ambiguity and sensitivity
•Demonstrable initiative to analyse and resolve problems quickly, efficiently and collaboratively
•Organised and able to use Microsoft Office applications
•Strong business acumen and understanding of organisational issues and challenges
•Experience in translating strategic objectives into team objectives
•Understanding and experience of project and resource management (desirable)
•Track record in leading design teams (desirable)
